Cleveland State University is pleased to invite applications and nominations for the position of Inaugural Chair of a new Department of Computer Science in the Washkewicz College of Engineering, which will be established Fall 2023. Since 1923, marking its centennial, the Washkewicz College of Engineering has provided a tradition of high quality undergraduate and graduate education in engineering, engineering technology, and computer science. The exciting opportunity to lead a new department comes at a pivotal time in the state of Ohio’s plans to create an Innovation District in Cleveland, bringing together three major hospital systems and two universities, with an anticipated $3 billion impact on the region.

The new Department will offer BS degrees in Computer Science and Data Science, and MS degrees in Computer Science and Software Engineering. Computer Science faculty also participate in the college-wide Ph.D in Engineering program with a specialization in Computer Science, and will play an important role in a new Applied Data Science Ph.D. Currently 17 tenured/tenure-track CS faculty serve 300 undergraduate and 600 graduate students.

The inaugural Chair will shape a growing department with plans to invest in high performance computing and quantum computing, funded partly by NSF grants. With multiple opportunities to participate in the $565 million JobsOhio Cleveland Innovation District project, the new chair will also play an important role in a vision to development CS+X degree implementation through active collaboration across the university.
