PUBLIC WORKS POSITION(S)
The Borough of Cokeburg, Washington County is accepting applications for position(s) in the Borough’s Public Works Department. These full-time position(s) will be responsible for:
Examples of Work Performed:
- Loads and unloads materials and tools from trucks.
- Patches road surfaces by cleaning potholes, applying patching materials, leveling and packing.
- Cleans and seals highway surface cracks.
- Provides traffic control.
- Cuts grass, bushes, trees and branches using hand and power tools.
- Picks up trash along roads and on Borough-owned property.
- Applies weed killers, snow and ice control materials and other maintenance chemicals.
- Digs drainage ditches, cleans out drains, pipes, streams and flood control structures.
- Installs and replaces signs; cleans gutters and inlets of debris; mixes cement; repairs and builds catch basins and manholes using brick, mortar and other materials.
- Provides routine construction and maintenance such as patching, plastering, painting,varnishing, plumbing, electrical and related work on Borough buildings.
- Maintains Borough grounds including playground equipment.
- Drives and operates pickup trucks, dump trucks, snowplows, salt spreaders, mowers, backhoes and other equipment as necessary for road, street and park maintenance.
- Performs routine cleaning and maintenance and makes standard adjustments on above equipment and other Borough-owned/maintained vehicles. Keeps vehicle maintenance records.
- Install and remove Christmas lights and Military banners.
- Performs related work as required.
Required Knowledges,
Skills & Abilities:
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions precisely.
- Ability to learn and carry out simple mechanical operations.
- Sufficient physical strength and freedom from disabilities to lift heavy objects and perform heavy manual labor under adverse weather conditions for extended periods.
- Ability to traverse steep and uneven terrain under adverse weather conditions while carrying heavy equipment or materials.
- Ability to climb ladders.
- Ability to enter and exit storm manholes and inlets if necessary.
- Ability to perform a variety of semi-skilled tasks such as erecting signs, painting, finishing cement, constructing catch basins, etc.
- Knowledge of the proper operating procedures and safety practices associated with vehicles, trucks, construction equipment, power tools and hand tools.
- Ability to recognize defective operation of equipment and perform routine maintenance operations.
- Knowledge of State laws pertaining to the operation of motor vehicles on highways.
- Skill in the operation of assigned equipment and tools.
- Ability to work with other employees in the operation of equipment to facilitate smooth operations.
- Knowledge of the practices and procedures of road and street construction and maintenance.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and required safety precautions of working on public roads and working around construction equipment.
- Knowledge of the operational characteristics, capabilities and maintenance requirements of road construction and maintenance equipment.
- Ability to deal courteously, tactfully and firmly with the public.
- Knowledge and experience with computer-based supply ordering and bidding process (PA CO-STARS) A-plus
The desired applicant is preferred to have basic knowledge of the day-to-day operations of a municipal Public Works Department along with prior construction, maintenance or trade experience. Must have a valid PA driver’s license and be at least 18 years old.
