Dental Hygiene Program Director

Danville Community College developed from two institutions, Danville Technical Institute and the Danville Division of Virginia Polytechnic Institute opened in 1936 as Danville Textile School, becoming Danville Technical Institute just after World War II. The Danville Division of Virginia Polytechnic Institute first began as an engineering division in 1946 and was later expanded to include the first two years of course work for all engineering, business administration, liberal arts, and science majors. Beginning in the summer of 1966, all programs taught by Danville Technical Institute were brought under the Virginia Department of Community Colleges. Effective July 1, 1968, the Danville Division of Virginia Polytechnic Institute merged with the existing community college providing the comprehensive programs now offered.

Danville Community College is accepting applications for a full-time 9-month teaching faculty position in Dental Hygiene. This faculty member will serve as the Dental Hygiene Educator/Manager, assisting with the daily operation and administration of the distance learning component of an accredited dental hygiene program. Responsibilities include but are not limited to preclinical and clinical instruction, clinical management and administration, academic advising, counseling and recruitment, management of the budget at the distance site with oversight provided by the program director, and administrative duties at the distance campus.

Responsibilities:

  • Assists Virginia Western Community College (VWCC) Program Head and Clinical Coordinator with the clinical management and administrative aspects of the distance learning dental hygiene program at DCC. Progress will be reported on a weekly basis via E-mail
  • Manages the budget at DCC with oversight provided by the Dental Hygiene Program Director
  • Serves as a member of the VWCC-DCC Distance Dental Hygiene Curriculum Advisory Committee
  • Participates in new student orientation
  • Conducts 5-week clinical advising sessions with students
  • Serves as on-site academic and clinical advisor to admitted students
  • Provides program information to interested individuals during schedule campus activities Participates in recruitment activities as needed
  • Holds weekly office hours
  • Oversees inventory and ordering clinical supplies, forms, and patient education supplies
  • Coordinates distribution of instruments, materials and forms to students at DCC
  • Provides preclinical and clinical instruction during the academic year (at least one 3-hour pre-clinical session/week laboratory component of DNH 141; at least one 3-hour clinical session/week clinical component of DNH 142) and perform other teaching duties that may be assigned
  • Recruits and supervises staff dentists for each semester
  • Interacts with members of the local dental society on behalf of the Joint Venture Dental Hygiene Program
  • Develops clinic patient recruitment strategies
  • Serves as liaison with faculty, staff and grant manager at DCC
  • Coordinates clinical scheduling with off campus enrichment facilities
  • Supervises clinical faculty
  • Serves as liaison between clinical faculty at distance site and faculty at VWCC
  • Monitors student clinical caseloads for difficulty level, certification of need and value of care and provides periodic reports to the local community regarding clinical services
  • Monitors infection control procedures, client safety and compliance with Commission on Dental Accreditation Standards applicable to the clinical setting
  • Assists students with case and classroom assignments by serving as a faculty resource
  • Assists in evaluation of effectiveness of the distance program
  • Works with DCC Educational Foundation Director to identify fund-raising sources, activities and grants
  • Other duties as may be assigned related to the operation of the program

KSA’s/Required Qualifications:

  • Dental hygienist licensed in Virginia or eligible for Virginia license
  • Prior clinical practice experience and teaching experience Bachelor’s degree in Dental Hygiene, Health Sciences or a related field
  • Excellent Microsoft Office skills.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and time-management skills.
  • Skilled at managing a budget.
  • Ability to utilize campus resources including software and college learning management systems.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and use sound judgement in decision making.
  • Ability to communicate with a diverse community of faculty, staff and students.
  • Skilled in written and oral communication.
  • Skilled in monitoring, mentoring, and evaluating.
  • Skilled in reviewing, interpreting, and using data to make decisions.
  • Skilled in developing, implementing, and communicating college policies and procedures.
  • Skilled in problem-solving and working effectively with administration, faculty, staff and students
  • The ability to articulate with both high school faculty and students is expected, as is the ability and willingness to market the program to potential students of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Commitment to teaching excellence with an enthusiasm for teaching.
  • Ability to use technology to enhance instruction.
  • Ability to effectively teach in classrooms and labs.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior teaching experience at the high school or community college level
