Safety and Security Coordinator
Gaston College is an award-winning community college in North Carolina that is dedicated to providing Opportunities for Life. With three campuses located in Gaston and Lincoln counties, we have an exciting opportunity for an Environmental, Health, & Safety Coordinator to join our dynamic team.
Responsible for leading, maintaining, and coordinating campus safety and security programs to meet or exceed compliance with all applicable federal, state, local laws/regulations and College standards. Reports to the Manager of Human Resources, EHS, and Professional Development and collaborates regularly with Campus Police and Security.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead, develop, maintain, and/or coordinate safety and security programs, procedures (e.g., Safety Manual), plans, training, and exercises as they apply to internal operations as well as coordination with external entities.
- Develop, implement, and support health and safety strategies, systems, policies, and procedures.
- Provide continuous oversight of College-wide activities with regard to safety and security.
- Plan, develop, and implement regular tabletop, functional, and full-scale exercises and drills designed to test responses to various situations and to continually improve effectiveness.
- Collaborate with College departments and external entities such as the NC Community College Environmental, Health, and Safety Institute, to conduct and/or coordinate regular and documented safety audits, inspections, and testing, and implement loss prevention/hazard mitigation/risk management plans.
- Work closely with Campus Police and Security to prepare and maintain the Emergency Operations Plan (EOP), Incident Action Plans (IAP), Emergency Response Guide (ERG), Annual Security Report (ASR), and assist the College with Continuity of Operations Plans (COOP).
- Serve as a liaison with local, state, and federal agencies (e.g., Law Enforcement, Fire, EMS, FEMA) and other organizations (e.g., County or State EHS Associations and The American Red Cross) to facilitate and coordinate emergency plan development, response, and recovery.
- Keep informed of activities or changes that could affect the likelihood of, or response to, an emergency situation.
- Support and facilitate involvement in safety and health processes, and respond to faculty, staff, and student safety- and security-related questions, issues, and concerns in a supportive, professional, and timely manner.
- Conduct and/or coordinate accident/incident/near-miss investigations to determine root cause(s), document findings for analysis, and implement corrective and/or preventive measures.
- Coordinate ongoing development, evaluation, and improvement of safety programs and procedures including, but not limited to, Bloodborne Pathogens, Electrical, Fall Protection, Hazard Communications and Materials, Ergonomics, Machine Guarding, Personal Protective Equipment, Lock Out/Tag Out, Confined Space, Lab Safety, and Emergency Action Plans.
- Coordinate the College's Chemical Management Program, including, but not limited to training on and maintaining the Safety Data Sheets (SDS) system, testing, chemical procurement, inventory, storage, and disposal.
- Administer state and federal safety-related reporting (e.g., NC DOL Survey and OSHA 300, 300A, and 301).
- Maintain safety Key Performance Indicators (e.g., recordable incident rate, lost-time accidents) and use data to formulate safety awareness, education, and loss prevention strategies.
- Promote safety and security awareness and engagement through digital and hardcopy communications, presenting at departmental, divisional, and other meetings, and by leading and/or facilitating safety committees.
- Maintain a current working knowledge of safety- and security-related trends, regulations, laws, and compliance expectations.
- Develop and maintain Job Safety Analysis (JSAs) and assist with determining physical requirements for all positions.
- Coordinate and manage safety- and security-related situations and projects.
- Maintain a high standard of professional and ethical practice in representing the College. Maintain confidentiality of relevant information. Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the field or discipline with continued adherence to professional accountability. Provide a high level of service to customers by establishing and maintaining effective working relationships and partnerships. Accept responsibility for managing situations and problems. Work cooperatively with team members and colleagues and contribute positively and constructively to the achievement of team and College objectives. Adhere to the College's policies, procedures, and other established guidelines.
- Perform other duties as assigned, including special projects.
MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS
- Associate degree from a regionally accredited college required. Bachelor's degree preferred.
- Knowledge of, and experience with, OSHA General Industry/Contractor Standards, related standards/regulations (e.g., EPA, NFPA, and/or NIOSH), required.
- Certification for the OSHA 30-Hour Training for General Industry preferred.
- Certified Emergency Manager (CEM) certification preferred.
- Completion of Incident Command System (ICS) 100, 200, 300, 400 and National Incident Management System (NIMS) 700 and 800 training preferred.
