ROLE of the POSITION
The College of Engineering Makerspace Coordinator (MC) is responsible for supporting the educational and research activities of the engineering and computer science faculty and students. This position leads the instructional initiatives of the Makerspace through curricular and co-curricular outreach and facilitation of individual and group instruction. The incumbent coordinates daily Makerspace operations and supervises a team of student employees who maintain safety standards and provide assistance to users. As a member of the College of Engineering and AEB building, this position works jointly with all disciplines to explore the application of technology in learning and research, and prioritizes creating inclusive spaces and experiences for the UNLV community.
The position's primary responsibility is to manage and operate the AEB makerspace and to ensure that the equipment and the facilities are accessible/secure, safe, organized, and maintained. The position is responsible for overseeing student work, and enforcing safe operating procedures. The MC is charged with developing operational procedures and policies, and perform routine inspection, calibration, and maintenance of the equipment in the maker space per respective manufacture recommendations. Additionally, the MC is responsible for creating and maintaining an inventory of lab supplies. The MC will report to the dean and associate dean to resupply the maker space as necessary, and report the need to replace equipment that is beyond its life cycle or no longer serviceable. The MC is responsible for providing input to the college leaders regarding upgrades and improvements to the makerspace.
The MC position will interact with many diverse groups. The MC works collaboratively with the program faculty from the College of Engineering and other academic units to support class labs, student capstone projects, and innovation projects. Additionally, the MC may work with other university groups, such as Facilities Management and Risk Management & Safety, to maintain operations in the makerspace. The MC is expected to routinely work with students by providing instruction and demonstrations regarding the safe use of the equipment within the program's areas.
The MC position will contribute to program assessment reports by providing information regarding the equipment in the space, an accounting of student hours in the labs, and other relevant data regarding the use of the facilities and the space.
The MC must be able to accommodate additional responsibilities assigned by the Dean and Associate Deans of the College of Engineering.
This position requires a Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Technology from an accredited college or university as recognized by the United States Department of Education and/or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), and a minimum of 2 years of documented experience in a lab or machine shop setting, in addition to 1 year of management experience. An Associate degree in Engineering or Technology with a minimum of 6 years of documented experience in a lab or machine shop setting will be considered in lieu of the Bachelor’s degree. Credentials must be obtained prior to the start date.

- Knowledge and experience on sensors, instrumentation, and data acquisition systems
- Strong understanding of the needs of small business owners
- Knowledge of developing programs and educational workshops.
- Knowledge of utilizing technology to advance the needs of small businesses, startups, and entrepreneurs.
- Must be able to express engineering concepts verbally, and/or through the use of graphical and mathematical means.
- Must be able to handle complicated tasks involving high-end equipment and software.
- Efficiently assess and adapt to user needs, gauge their level of proficiency, and adjust instruction methods appropriately
- Able to stand for prolonged periods of time while operating machinery.
- Capable of transferring raw material and projects from storage to the makerspace.
- Ability to provide varying levels technologies training and support.
- Able to keep abreast of current products and services.
- Ability to integrate emerging technologies from various vendors or open-source applications.
- Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and to meet deadlines
- Clear communication skills required.
- Coding skills as they apply to circuitry preferred.
- Knowledge of university processes and procedures
- The preferred breadth of their knowledge would include an understanding of any of the following: advance fabrication techniques including CAM and CAD software, 3-D modeling, 3-D printing, welding and metal fabrication, and semiconductors.
