The Director of Financial Reporting will assist with the University, Medical Center, and College at Wise financial statement consolidation for the external financial and compliance reporting process. This will also include planning and coordinating the annual external audit process, providing specialized and industry- specific guidance on accounting related issues to UVA management, proactively document and align accounting standards adoption as well as providing support to the accounting offices of the University on generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and Governmental Accounting Standards board (GASB) related issues.

Job Description

Assist with the annual audit process for the University's consolidated financial statements and other required financial-oriented compliance reporting. This includes working with auditors, UVA departments, and the Medical Center to ensure timely and accurate completion.

Prepare required basic financial statements and footnotes to the consolidated external financial statements and quarterly BOV reports.

Prepare work schedules and other work papers in support of the University's GAAP and GASB financial statement consolidation and reports.

Prepare journal entries required for the year-end and quarter-end processes to conform with GASB accounting standards.

Proactively assess implementation of GASB accounting standards and align documentation and submission as well as ensure associated business processes and policies are being addressed.

Coordinate with Financial Reporting and Data Operations as well as University and Medical Center Accounting areas to improve and enhance financial data reporting techniques and related controls.

Develop new and provide an assessment on existing accounting procedures related to significant business processes that materially impact the consolidated financial statement preparation, including accounting journals, consolidation, intercompany accounting and eliminations, general ledger reconciliation, and more.

Conduct annual review of all assumptions used in codification from respective chart of accounts for external financial statement presentation and ensure all data is complete and accurate.

Perform quarterly flux analysis on all consolidated activities and evaluate and document other consolidated accounting inclusions and eliminations including balance sheet reconciliations, income statement variance, and ensuring integrity, standardization, and consistency of balance sheet, income statements, cashflow statement performance indicators, and other reporting to be shared with management.

Proactively identify areas for process improvement in financial reporting, including developing new reports or taking advantage of new ERP functionality.

Compile historical data as requested by University administrators, officers, the Board of Visitors, and external agencies.

Prepare financial sections of all compliance reporting identified.

Provide specialized and industry-specific guidance to appropriate UVA personnel on issues related to external financial reporting, generally accepted accounting principles, and federal compliance and reporting requirements.

Maintain NACUBO Financial Accounting and Reporting (FARM) manual for use by appropriate accounting personnel.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Additional Job Description

Preferred Experience:

Ten years of direct experience in public accounting or similar settings.

Thorough knowledge of accounting, auditing, and external financial reporting principles, preferred experience in both Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) combined with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).

Duties require applying complex accounting and external financial reporting principles, identifying and analyzing accounting and financial reporting questions, and developing solutions responsive to those inquiries.

Strong interpersonal and project management skills are necessary.

Ability to learn quickly and adapt to changing circumstances.

Ability to appropriately guide, direct and manage multiple constituencies while engaging with senior management, executive leadership, and external agencies.

Understanding of large Enterprise Resource Planning financial systems. Workday Preferred.

Licensure: Certified public accountant status, Masters in Accounting, or an equivalent designation is strongly preferred.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: Bachelor's degree in relevant subject required, MBA or Masters' degree in relevant subject is strongly preferred.

Experience: Ten years of experience in a financial discipline required, supervisory experience is preferred.

Licensure: May hold CPA or other advanced financial certification.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
